Wild elephant trapped in a tea garden trench rescued at Bhutiachang

A wild female elephant which had fallen into deep tea garden trench in Bhutiachang tea garden (section 24) was successfully rescued in the afternoon of June 14. According to information a herd of wild elephant numbering more than forty was seen roaming in and around Bhutiachang te garden since last week. The herd was quite peaceful and friendly to people. Tea garden workers found one mature female wild elephant in a deep trench in the morning of June 14. The animal was in upside down pointing all the legs to sky. The herd and the victim tried in vain to stand on her legs for several hours without success. It had been a touching sight in the afternoon to see the members of the herd leave her giving way to people to start rescue operation.
Tea garden management of Bhutiachang offered all necessary help in rescuing the trapped animal. The joint effort of civil, forest, police and tea garden workers finally bore fruit and the elephant was able to stand on her legs to join her dear herd. The whole rescue operation was supervised by -Girindra Adhikari,DFO,Dhansiri Forest Division, Udalguri; DN Hazarika,Circle Officer, Harisinga Revenue Circle and A Das,Manager, Bhutiachang TE. The incident has been considered very significant at a time when man-elephant conflict has taken serious turn in the district causing death of three man and one wild elephant in this month.
